I met Angel when I was 15 years old. Our families attended the same church in Lugoff, SC. It wasn't long before we became inseparable. Her family and friend became my family and friends and vice versa. I went from spending nights to weekends to weeks with Angel. Her dad was in the military and moved around so it was just her in the apartment she was living in. Some may think it was strange that my parents would allow me to basically live with someone else at such a young age. When God ordains a thing it flows the way it should and so my parents were comfortable with allowing me to be around her. This was the perfect set up for a teenager trying to have a little freedom and get away from her issues at home. Little did I know, the arrangement would birth so much more. Angel ended up being the big sister to me that I always wanted and so desperately needed. She mentored me, kept me out of trouble, held me accountably for my school work, and fussed at me when applicable. Most of all, she nurtured me and loved me like I was her very own child. When that burgundy Nissan Centra burned the road up to go visit family you could count on my head being in the passenger seat. Even when Angel moved we kept in touch daily and made frequent trips to visit each other. I turned 45 years old this year and still don't know what I would do or where I would be if it weren't for Angel being in my life. We had no idea back then that I would actually turn out to be the first person she would mentor and that it would lay the foundation for the platform that she has today. This year I sent Angel a text for Mother's Day. It went a little something like this….."Hey Sis. I've never said this to you before, but you played a huge roll in my development as a human being. I met you at such a vulnerable age and frame of mind and you made sure you didn't negatively take advantage of that. You loved and nurtured me in such a perfect way that I felt safe and confident as a young woman. That feeling can't be bought. I say all of this to say I love you and I want to take this time to wish you a Happy Mother's Day! Although you may not possess any biological children, you have definitely been more than a portion of a mom to me and so many others. You are beautiful, loved, appreciated, and worthy of acknowledgement.
